What contributes to You Teams motivation
In a multi-year study, researchers at the Harvard Business School first asked 600 managers from dozens of different companies to rank the impact of five factors that are normally associated with motivation – recognition, incentives, support from managers and colleagues, clear goals and a sense of making progress. In this first phase of the study, recognition for good work was ranked by managers as the most important factor in motivation
There are important implications from this research on terms of how we stay motivated. How we maintain motivation in people that work with us.
If you have people working with you you want to insure your not an obstacle to progress. So you need to be consistent in the direction you provide. You need to provide employees with the tools they need and provide clear direction. These are all important, but beyond that one of the things we need to do is find way to recognize and acknowledge progress.
Most people in the study reportedly found that on their very best days they felt they were making significant progress and that contributed to their motivational level. This was compared to when they reported having their worst days there was a correlation to a set-back in terms of moving forward.
One way you can acknowledge progress everyday is at the end of the day before you leave take 30 seconds write down 3 things that you got done that day that feel good about.
One adviser took it one step further by explaining each morning as part of their team meeting they finished the meeting by having each person indicate the three most important things they wanted to do that day. Even if it was picking up the phone and making a call to a tough client that is over due that could be one of the three things. They circulated everyone’s top three things that where most important to each team member within a half hour. They then started the next days starting the meetings first five minutes with how well they did and what was the result of that. The outcome was even if they had a difficult day they felt better about the day. Stay positive and make your list of the three most important things you want to accomplish each day and work on getting them done, you just may feel better and more motivated to get that engine running in the first place.
